A cluttered home is stressful because it’s tough to find what you need. Here are 5 steps for decluttering your home to improve your living space.

Decluttering Your Home, One Area at a Time

You’ll be most successful at decluttering your home when you focus on one area at a time. Pick a room, closet, or even a drawer to get started. If you aren’t focused on one space, the project may feel too overwhelming. Without a plan, you’re likely to wander from room to room and not accomplish anything.

Clean

Once you have decided where to start, like a closet or set of drawers, remove everything from the area. This will give you a blank slate to work with. While the area is empty, take the opportunity to clean it thoroughly.

Sort

With everything pulled out, you can clearly see what has been stored in the area. Sort through the items and decide what to keep, what to donate, and what to throw away.

It might be difficult to part with certain items, but if you haven’t used them in a year that is a good sign that you don’t need them and they’re just taking up space.

Re-Organize

After your belongings are sorted, it will be much easier to reorganize them. Group similar items together and designate a spot to keep them. You may need to invest in some storage solutions to keep things organized.

For instance, a hanging organizer with pockets on the back of the closet door is helpful for containing small objects that usually create a mess. Accessories, phone chargers, and pens are some items that cause clutter but can be neatly organized in compartments.

Once you have designated places for your belongings, be sure to put them back where they belong after using them so your home stays clutter-free.

Label After Decluttering Your Home

Just because you know where everything belongs after decluttering your home doesn’t mean your whole family does. Label and show them the new storage solutions.

If there is any question about where something should go, family members can simply refer to the labels on bins, pockets, or other containers. A label maker creates neat and uniform labels.
